When to Book Maternity Photos in Chicago: A Simple Timeline for Expecting Parents

Somewhere between the nausea, the nesting, the fifteen doctor appointments, and the group chat where everyone has an opinion about your registry, a tiny voice in your head goes: "wait, when am I supposed to book maternity photos?"

Good news — this is one pregnancy question with an actual answer, not seventeen conflicting ones from seventeen different people.

The direct answer: inquire in the second trimester

If you remember nothing else from this post, remember this: reach out during your second trimester. Not because there's a strict rule written down somewhere, but because good photographers — including me — tend to book up a few months in advance, and the second trimester gives you room to actually land a date instead of scrambling.

You don't need to have a location picked, an outfit chosen, or your life together in any way. You just need to send the message.

The sweet spot: 28 to 34 weeks

Once you've reached out, the session itself typically happens between 28 and 34 weeks. This window is basically the Goldilocks zone of pregnancy — your belly has that full, round shape everyone pictures when they think "maternity photos," you're (usually) still mobile and comfortable enough to walk around and get into a few different positions, and you're not yet in the final "please just get this baby out of me" stretch where standing for photos sounds like a personal attack.

What if you're already further along than that?

Deep breath. You are not too late. I've photographed maternity sessions well into the final weeks, and while your energy and comfort level are part of the conversation, "later than ideal" is not the same as "impossible." Reach out anyway. We'll figure out what works for you and your very tired, very pregnant body, and it'll still be beautiful.

Chicago weather has opinions about your outdoor session

If you're picturing an outdoor Chicago maternity photography session — golden hour, a pretty field, wind gently moving your dress — that's genuinely lovely, and also somewhat at the mercy of Midwest weather, which does not care about your Pinterest board. Outdoor sessions scheduled for late fall or winter come with real scheduling flexibility built in, because nobody's standing outside gracefully glowing at 20 degrees with a wind chill doing its best impression of Antarctica.

Which brings me to winter's actual best-kept secret

If your window happens to land in the colder months, an in-home maternity session isn't a consolation prize. It's genuinely one of my favorite ways to photograph this season of your life. Soft window light, your own space, zero weather stress, and none of the "is my nose going numb" energy that outdoor winter sessions inevitably have. Some of the coziest, most intimate galleries I've ever delivered came from sessions where nobody left the house.

Planning maternity and newborn together, without cornering yourself

A lot of expecting parents like to book their maternity and newborn sessions together to lock in the timeline and feel like one less thing is up in the air — and I love that instinct. Here's the one thing to keep loose: don't pin down your exact newborn session date yet. Babies do not care about calendars. We'll set a placeholder around your due date, then confirm the real date once your baby actually decides to show up. Think of it as reserving the season, not the day.

Ready to actually get this on the calendar?

If you're somewhere in your second trimester right now, this is your sign. And if you want to see what an actual session looks like before committing to anything, take a peek at a recent local maternity session — sunset, forest preserve, one outfit, zero stress.

FAQ

  • When should I book my maternity session? — During your second trimester, if possible. Good photographers book up a few months out, so this gives you the best shot at landing your ideal date.
  • What's the best week for maternity photos? — Most sessions happen between 28 and 34 weeks — your belly has that full, round shape, and you're usually still comfortable enough to move around for the session.
  • What if I'm already past 34 weeks? — Reach out anyway. Later sessions are still absolutely possible — we'll just work with where you're at, energy and comfort included.
  • Can I book maternity and newborn sessions together? — Yes, and a lot of parents do. Just know your newborn date will be a flexible placeholder around your due date until baby actually arrives.
  • Can I still do an outdoor maternity session in winter? — You can, but weather makes outdoor winter sessions less predictable. An in-home session is often the better call for that season — not a fallback, a genuinely great option.
