A Sunset Maternity Session at a Buffalo Grove Forest Preserve
Some sessions end and I genuinely don't want to pack up the camera. This was one of them.
A couple from Burr Ridge drove up to a forest preserve in Buffalo Grove for a golden-hour maternity session, and from the first few minutes, it was obvious this baby is already deeply loved. Not in a performed, camera-ready way — in the way two people talk about someone who doesn't exist yet like they already know them completely.
Joy that didn't need direction
I didn't have to coax much out of this session. They were already leaning into each other, already laughing, already so clearly excited that my job mostly became staying out of the way and letting the golden light catch what was already happening. As the sun dropped lower over the preserve, the light turned that soft, warm color that photographers chase all year, and it landed on two people who were exactly as happy as the light made them look.
One outfit, and it was more than enough
She wore a single, simple dress for the entire session — no outfit change, nothing complicated — and it photographed beautifully through every part of the evening. (If you're wondering whether you need multiple outfits for your own session, I wrote a full answer to that here; short version: probably not.)
The best compliment I didn't expect
Somewhere in the middle of the session, they started telling me how much they were looking forward to seeing the gallery — before they'd even seen a single image. That kind of trust, offered that early and that freely, isn't something I take for granted. It's also, in its own way, exactly the kind of joy this whole session was about: two people already certain this was going to be something they'd treasure, before there was any proof of it yet.
Why a forest preserve works so well for a sunset session
Buffalo Grove's forest preserves give you space, real trees, and open sky all in one place — which matters more than people expect for a golden-hour session. As the sun gets low, you need somewhere the light can actually reach you without buildings or dense tree cover blocking it too early. A preserve like this gives that light room to do what it does best in the last hour of the day.
