Cozy Newborn Session


There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you are invited into a family's home. You are not just taking pictures. You are being submerged in their world — in the rhythm of their mornings, the texture of their walls, the specific way the light falls through the windows they know by heart. You get to witness the beautiful, chaotic, deeply loving architecture of their everyday lives.

That is exactly what happened during this recent in-home lifestyle session in Andersonville, Chicago.

When I arrived, the energy was already buzzing in the best possible way. Music was playing softly throughout the house — not as a prop or a setup, but because this is simply how this family lives. It set a tone of ease and joy that carried through every single frame of the morning.

The star of the show was their son, a two-year-old boy with the kind of energy that fills a room and makes you smile before you even know why. Two is such a remarkable age to photograph. They are old enough to have strong opinions, a fully formed personality, and a sense of humor that will catch you completely off guard. They are still young enough to be entirely, beautifully unselfconscious.

We did not pose. We did not direct. We simply let the morning unfold, and I followed it with my camera.

Mom pulled out some of his favorite books, and they curled up together to read. There is something so quietly profound about photographing a mother reading to her child in the exact spot they do it every single day. It is not a set. It is not a backdrop. It is their sanctuary, and I was honored to be a quiet witness to it.

Then came the jumping. If there is a bed in the house, a two-year-old will find it, and he will jump on it, and I am always here for it. The sheer, unfiltered joy on his face as he caught air — his parents laughing beside him, the whole room feeling like it was lit from the inside — made for some of the most alive images of the entire session. We also played with a balloon, which added a wonderful element of movement and color and the kind of spontaneous laughter that you simply cannot manufacture.

And then there was Penny.

Penny, the family's sweet dog, was a gentle, steady presence throughout the morning. She moved through the session the way she moves through their lives — unhurried, warm, completely at home. Pets are family, and I always encourage my clients to include them. Penny added an extra layer of realness and love to every room she wandered into.

But my favorite moments of any in-home session are the quiet details. The things that seem ordinary right now, but will be the exact things this family aches to remember when their son is grown and the house is still.

I made sure to photograph the letter magnets scattered across the refrigerator — the alphabet in cheerful chaos, evidence of a mind that is learning everything all at once. I captured his little table, sized perfectly for a person who is still figuring out how big the world is. I photographed his stuffed animals, lined up with a two-year-old's particular sense of order in his crib — each one a companion, each one with a name only he knows.

And then there was the window.

There is a specific spot in their Andersonville home — a particular window — where this little boy sits every day to watch the trains go by outside. It is his ritual. His daily appointment with the world beyond the glass. I photographed him there, sitting in his brother's crib, completely still for the first time all morning, his whole small body leaning into the wonder of it.

This is the image I think about when I think about why I do this work.

That window will always be there. But the boy who sits by it, at exactly this height, with exactly this sense of awe, at exactly two years old — he is only here for a moment. And now, that moment is preserved.
