Not every newborn session happens around a sleeping baby. This Lake Forest afternoon was one of those days. Their little one was awake for much of our time together, so we let the session follow that rhythm instead of working against it.

As a Lake Forest newborn photographer, I walk into each family’s home ready to meet the day as it is. This one was relaxed, unhurried, and led by the baby from beginning to end.

A Session That Followed the Baby

Newborn sessions are often imagined as one picture: a sleeping baby, carefully settled. That’s one version of these early weeks. It isn’t the only one.

Because this baby was awake for so much of the afternoon, we didn’t wait around for sleep. We moved at the baby’s pace. There was no rushing and no checklist to get through. When something shifted, we shifted with it.

An awake newborn session isn’t more meaningful than a sleepy one, and it isn’t less. It’s simply a different shape of the same fleeting season, and that season is worth photographing exactly as it unfolds.

Overalls, Jeans, and an Afternoon at Home

Mom wore overalls. Dad wore jeans.

There was nothing formal about it, and that’s part of what makes these images feel like them. When parents dress the way they actually live, the photographs hold on to something true about this stretch of their lives. Years from now, those details will mean something.

We also spent time in the backyard. It wasn’t a planned set. It was simply part of their home, and it became part of the session the same way the rooms inside did. Moving between spaces kept the afternoon open and easy, more like an ordinary day together than a production.

Why Home Made Sense for This Afternoon

In-home newborn photography in Lake Forest means the session happens in the family’s own space, on the baby’s own timeline. There’s no studio clock to watch, and no one has to be anyone other than themselves.

That’s what let this afternoon unfold the way it did. An awake baby, parents in their everyday clothes, and a backyard right outside the door: none of it needed to be arranged or worked around. It all became the session.

If your baby ends up awake for much of your session, that isn’t a problem to solve. It’s part of your story, and it can be photographed with the same care and quiet attention as any other part.
