A 6-Month Milestone Session in Palatine, All Rolls and Giggles

Somewhere between the newborn stage and a baby's first birthday, there's a window that doesn't get nearly enough credit: six months. It's not a big, calendar-marked milestone the way a first birthday is. Nobody sends out invitations for it. But if you ask me which age is the most fun to actually photograph, six months is close to the top of the list — and this recent Palatine session reminded me exactly why.

Why six months is such a good age to document

By six months, most babies can sit up with a little support, they're endlessly expressive, and they haven't quite figured out how to crawl away yet — which, from a photography standpoint, is a small miracle of timing. They're alert and reactive in a way newborns aren't, but still easy to keep in one spot in a way a mobile 9-month-old is not. Add in the fact that most babies this age are genuinely delighted by silly faces, peekaboo, and a parent making ridiculous noises just out of frame, and you get a session full of real, unforced joy instead of a battle to hold anyone's attention.

The rolls and the folds

There's a particular version of "chubby" that only really exists around this age — soft creases at the wrists, round cheeks, thighs with their own little folds. It doesn't last. A few months later, that same baby is upright, moving, and starting to lengthen out into a toddler shape. This session leaned into exactly that: close, simple images that let those folds and rolls be the whole point, not something to pose around or minimize.

The giggles were the real subject

If there's one thing that defined this Palatine session, it was the laughing. Not a posed, camera-aware smile — the real, full-body giggle that six-month-olds do so easily, the kind that comes from a silly sound or a game of peekaboo repeated one too many times. Those moments are almost impossible to plan for and completely impossible to fake later. We just kept playing until they happened, and then we caught them.

Why this age deserves its own session, not just a newborn one

A lot of parents book a newborn session and assume that's the one photography milestone that matters. It's a wonderful one, but it's also just the first chapter. Six months is an entirely different baby — a different face shape, a different personality, a different way of moving through the world — and none of that gets captured if the only professional photos are from week two. If you already have newborn images, a six-month session isn't repetitive. It's the next real chapter of the same story.

FAQ

Why book a 6-month session if we already did newborn photos? — Six months is a completely different stage — sitting up, laughing, full of personality — and it's just as worth documenting as the newborn days.

  • What should my baby wear for a 6-month session? — Simple and comfortable works best; soft, well-fitting basics photograph better than anything stiff or fussy, since a lot of the best moments happen mid-movement or mid-giggle.
  • Will my baby cooperate for the whole session? — Six months is actually one of the easier ages — babies this age are usually easy to amuse, not yet mobile enough to crawl off, and too young for stranger anxiety to be a big factor.
  • Do you offer 6-month milestone sessions in Palatine? — Yes, in-home milestone sessions are available throughout Palatine and the surrounding suburbs.
